Birthing without Fear is a revelation. It combines logical reasoning with meditation and hypnotherapy to radically change the way women give birth.

Hypnotherapy during childbirth is based on the theory that it is possible to experience an easy and comfortable birth; that labour and delivery can be pain free.

To achieve the results of hypnobirthing and for a pain-free labor, women must be able to remove fear from their experience, in order to have a pain free labor.

Hypnobirthing is about breaking the ill effects of the fear-tension-pain cycle on the birthing process.

Fear is mentioned as the number one reason why women experience pain during childbirth. What is possible, according to hypnobirthing specialists, is to experience birth only as pressure, movement and tension within the body.

The idea is that when a birthing woman is unencumbered by fear and full of knowledge about the natural process of birth, she is able to avoid the ill effects of the fear-tension-pain cycle on the birthing process.

I love it.

Grant Dick-Read was a doctor during World War 2. When he returned home to London he specialised in childcare, childbirth, and deliver.

His concept of pain during labour was blown away when he saw a woman give birth without assistance, pain or trauma. He understood that it was possible.

His ideas were originally mocked and he was discredited. His second book, Revelation of Childbirth (which was later retitled Childbirth without Fear), was published in 1942, and aimed at a general readership. It became an international bestseller, and it is still in print. Dick-Read was invited to give lecture tours all over the world.

It is incredibly outdated. There are many problems with this books and Dick-Reads philosphy. He was not the greatest of men in the world, writing that “The mother is the factory, and by education and care she can be made more efficient in the art of motherhood.”  Um WTF?

But if you can get past the 1940’s misogyny, there was a message hidden underneath that was carried on by a far more competent women Marie F. Mongan.

Inspired by the work of Dick-Read, Marie F. Mongan spread the message of pain-free childbirth further. Marie developed the Mongan Method,  which is what this book is all about.

A few people who read the book have stated that once they went into labour, this book seemed like this biggest pile of shit they had ever come across.

But there are others who said that this book saved their life. Having my own bad experiences with babies, I appreciated the time spent eliminating fear from childbirth and babies. It reminded me to surround this baby with happiness.

I read this book before giving birth. I loved it. I went on to have a spontaneous footling breech birth at 36 weeks to a sick underweight baby while being treated for pre eclampsia.

Without pain relief.

Boom.
